Private school teachers deprived of salary for months

Kathmandu. The majority of teachers working for private and boarding schools have not been paid on time and the Nepal Teachers’ Federation is making this the main agenda of the upcoming agitation.

Speaking at a virtual discussion on ‘Post-COVID problems of private school teachers’ organized by Education Journalists’ Society and Knowledge Research and Learning Resource Centre here yesterday, Vice-president of the federation Tilak Kunwar said private schools have been collecting the fee from students but not paying teachers. Instead, teachers are being removed from their jobs and deprived of appointment letters.

President of Institutional School Teachers Union Hom Kumar Thapa said many teachers had not been paid since February and repeated complaints made to the education authorities had not received any response.

President of Private and Boarding School Organisation Nepal, Bagmati Province, Thakin Kumar Gurung said even school proprietors were suffering as a result of the pandemic, the issue should be resolved jointly by all stakeholders.

Education rights worker Babu Kaji Shrestha said the labour of teachers needed to be respected and urged that private schools be included in the federal act.

General Secretary of Journalist Society Shesh Kant Pandit said the local level should exercise its authority with regard to regulation and management of private schools.
