Kathmandu | Google has launched a new tool to help identify images created using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Earlier this year, Google became an active member of the Content Provenance and Authority (C2PA), an organisation that works to develop standards for new technologies.
In addition, Google is working on a tool that creates watermarks for AI-generated content. The use of AI-generated images is rapidly increasing, as these images are often created using prompts that can make them appear very realistic. This trend poses several risks, with deepfake images being a well-known example of how AI can be misused to spread misinformation.
Google, along with other members of the organisation, has introduced a more secure version of the technology called 'Content Credentials'. According to Google, this new technology is more effective at preventing tampering and will be used to label AI-generated images.
AI labels will be included in images shown on Google Images, Lens, and Search, under the 'Content Credentials' system. This means users will be able to see whether an image has been created or edited with AI by checking the 'About this Image' section.
Furthermore, Google plans to integrate C2PA metadata into its advertising system. This metadata will provide important information about the company's future policies and regulations. Google is also working on how to provide similar information on YouTube, allowing users to know whether a video was shot with a camera or digitally created.
