kathmandu | Nepal is witnessing a surge in smartphone imports, according to the latest foreign trade data for August released by the Customs Department. In the second month of the current fiscal year 2081/82, the country imported smartphones worth NPR 6.79 billion. During this period, a total of 454,958 smartphones were imported.

In comparison, by the end of August in the last fiscal year 2080/81, Nepal had imported 366,481 smartphones worth NPR 5.36 billion. This marks an increase of NPR 1.34 billion in the current fiscal year, with an additional 88,477 smartphones imported.

The government has collected NPR 1.05 billion in revenue from smartphone imports during this fiscal year. Data shows that smartphones were imported from 37 countries, with China being the largest supplier. In August alone, Nepal imported 318,903 smartphones from China, valued at NPR 4.06 billion. India followed, supplying 135,076 smartphones worth NPR 2.55 billion.

In addition to China and India, smaller quantities of smartphones were imported from countries like Australia, Canada, the UAE, the USA, South Korea, and Japan, among others.
