Why Do Some People Feel Happy Even Near Death?

Kathmandu: Some people, even when facing extreme pain and hardship, manage to keep their patience. Even when they know their life is at risk and they don’t have much time left, their courage doesn’t fade, nor does their smile disappear. For most of us, who feel overwhelmed by small problems, such people seem extraordinary.

But how do these individuals manage to stay happy even in the face of such challenges? How do they find room for hope and positivity in the midst of their struggles?

Simon Boas' life is an example of this. Battling cancer, Simon passed away on 15th July at the age of 47. Before his death, in an interview with the BBC, he said, “My pain is managed, and I am very happy. It might sound strange, but I’m happier now than I ever was before.”

Simon’s words may sound surprising. How can someone so close to death be happy?

However, psychologists view this as normal. Research shows that when people face the fear of death, they often use positive language in their final days. As death approaches, a person develops a new understanding of life and begins to appreciate every moment.

Understanding Life Before Death

Simon Boas shared that he accepted his situation and began to focus on the small joys of life. Quoting Roman philosopher Seneca, he said, “Life is as long as we think it is, not as long as we measure in years.” Psychologist Viktor Frankl also emphasized that it’s important to find meaning in any situation, no matter how difficult.

The Importance of Social Connections and Simple Joys

One study shows that people nearing death often find happiness through their social relationships, the beauty of nature, and simple pleasures. As their health declines, their focus shifts from comfort to finding meaning and satisfaction in life.

What Emotions Arise During Death?

As death approaches, people experience a mix of emotions, including happiness, sadness, anger, regret, and contentment. This shift in perspective gives them the strength to feel joy even in their final days.

This understanding brings peace and satisfaction at the end of life, inspiring people to live happily until their last moments.
