Dr. Shashank Koirala Urges Congress to Bring Youth into Leadership

Kathmandu – Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shashank Koirala stresses that the party must promote younger members to leadership positions. Speaking at an event in Dhulikhel on Saturday, where a statue of B.P. Koirala was unveiled, Dr. Koirala highlighted the importance of encouraging youth leadership within the Congress party.
Dr. Koirala expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the party has not addressed the demands of the youth, despite their growing involvement. He mentioned that Sher Bahadur Deuba cannot remain party president forever, and it is time for the younger generation to take on leadership roles.
He referenced B.P. Koirala’s decision to resign from his position and hand over the party leadership to Krishna Prasad Bhattarai as an example for today’s leaders to follow.
“The majority of the population, around 60%, is under 40 years old. But our leaders never address them; it’s always about the older generation,” said Dr. Koirala. “Young people never get a chance to be ministers or even to be encouraged in any field. Why don’t we support the youth? Tomorrow’s politics should be in their hands.”
He emphasized that Deuba will not remain party president forever, and younger members must be given opportunities. “We, the older generation, are still here, but for how long? Today we are here, but tomorrow we might not be. We need to think ahead and hand over to the next generation,” he said.
Dr. Koirala also referred to B.P. Koirala’s leadership and selflessness, pointing out that simply admiring his legacy is not enough. "We must understand his ideals and follow his footsteps. The Nepali Congress is a strong force, yet we struggle to secure a majority."
He concluded by urging the party to stand firmly on its own and end the trend of falling into minority governments or coalitions, insisting that the Congress needs to become self-reliant and lead with strength and vision.
