Indian National Arrested with Over 1kg of Gold at Tribhuvan International Airport

Kathmandu: In a major bust at Tribhuvan International Airport, authorities seized 1.26 kilograms of gold being smuggled by an Indian national arriving from Bangkok. The incident took place on Friday when a joint operation between the airport's Customs Office and Nepal’s Armed Police Force intercepted the contraband.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Sumitradevi Laxman Ram, was apprehended after landing on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok. According to police, the gold was carefully concealed in three separate packets, each wrapped in plastic to evade detection.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shailendra Thapa, a spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, confirmed the arrest. "The gold was discovered during a routine inspection at the passenger checkpoint. Further investigations are underway," said DSP Thapa.

Sumitradevi has since been handed over to the Gaushala Police Circle for further inquiry. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges authorities face in cracking down on gold smuggling operations, which often use Nepal as a transit point.
