Political Parties Must Be Strong for People's Rights: Shankar Pokharel

Kathmandu: General Secretary of the ruling CPN-UML, Shankar Pokharel, emphasises that political parties need to be strong in a democracy for people's rights to be exercised.

Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony of the UML headquarters building in Kirtipur on Friday, Pokharel argues that strong political parties are essential for a strong state, which in turn enables citizens to exercise their rights. He expresses confidence that the new building will be modern and play a role in the nation's development.

The building is being constructed on 10 ropanis and 14 annas of land, which was donated by Min Bahadur Gurung, the head of Bhatbhateni Supermarket, who has also committed to funding its construction. Pokharel thanks Gurung and his family for their generous contribution.

He says, “In a democracy, political parties serve as representative institutions in society. Only when they are strong does democracy become strong, and the state becomes capable. When the state is strong in a democracy, people can fully exercise their rights. In that context, this modern office building is crucial for the construction of a modern Nepal. I sincerely thank Min Bahadur Gurung and Savitri Gurung for their generous decision to provide this land as a donation."

Gurung expresses gratitude to the UML for trusting him with the construction project, sharing his happiness at being able to contribute, given his close ties to the party. He pledges to complete the building, which will be earthquake-resistant up to nine on the Richter scale, and hand it over to the UML by Dashain 2082.

Gurung adds, "I am deeply thankful to the UML for this opportunity. As a businessman, I feel I have fulfilled my responsibility. This building will withstand earthquakes up to nine on the Richter scale. I promise it will be a modern, beautiful structure, and we will hand it over by next year's Dashain festival. I invite you all to the opening ceremony on that day."

Gurung also recalls his contributions as a businessman to other political parties and various sectors of society.
