We Won’t Tolerate Artificial Shortages or Black Market Practices During Festivals: Minister Bhandari
Minister Bhandari stressed that the government’s goal is to ensure a fair and accessible market for essential goods and urged businesses to cooperate in achieving this.
Kathmandu. Damodar Bhandari, Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, has stated that those creating artificial shortages and engaging in black market practices during festival times will face legal action.
Speaking at a welcome and interaction programme organised by the Kailali Chamber of Commerce in Dhangadhi on Tuesday, Minister Bhandari emphasised the government's commitment to promoting fair trade and business, while also making it clear that artificial shortages and black market activities will not be tolerated.
He announced that market monitoring will be intensified ahead of the festive season, and if anyone is found selling non-edible items or creating shortages for profit, they will be dealt with according to the law.
To ensure easy availability of essential goods, the government will continue operating subsidised shops during festivals, Bhandari said. He also mentioned that the prices of essential items, including food products, have been set, and the ministry is preparing to fix the price of sugar to keep it affordable, aiming for a two-digit price.
So far, 61 affordable shops targeting the Dashain and Tihar festivals have been opened in 41 districts, according to the minister.

During the programme, local business owners also shared their challenges with Minister Bhandari, and he promised to work towards resolving the issues they raised.
